What are Oriental textiles?
Oriental textiles are found within what is traditionally referred to as the Orient. The Orient stretches from Istanbul, Turkey to Western China. The old Oriental Express used to carry travelers from Paris to Istanbul, the gateway to the east. This area includes many other cultures such as India and Tibet, but the bulk of Oriental textiles come out of Islam.
«Islamic Pattern incorporates free - flowing floral arabesque and calligraphy into disciplined, mathematically inspired, geometric self-generating designs — a Language of order and unity. Symbolic shapes connected with Muslim beliefs, such as the Mirhrab (arch)... were combined with the traditional patterns of central Asian textiles (Harvey)».
